PERMACULTURE

The concept of permaculture is inspired by the thousand year old tradition of Forest Gardening that originated in the south American Amazonian region. In Tanzania, for more than 400 years, the tribes of Meru on the Mount Meru at the Arusha National park and the Chagga at the Mount Kilimandjaro have been practicing Forest Gardening-based agriculture.

We want to lead the local population in an inspiring revival of this cultural tradition, which fell into oblivion in the decades of agricultural monocultures during the regime of Julius Nyerere. Garden areas for the re-introduction of indigenous tree populations, and the cultivation of crops and medicinal plants will be developed.

We will create a haven of permaculture and self-catering, where guests can relax and actively contribute.

A beekeeping project has been established under the leadership of the beekeeper and permaculture teacher Franko Göhse. This takes place in close cooperation with traditional Tanzanian beekeepers on the site of the Africa Amini Maasai-Lodge in the Maasai steppe, and on the outskirts of the Arusha National park.

Due to the training of the native population and the support for the establishment of a viable income from honey production, we will raise awareness of the need for environmental protection. Reducing the use of agricultural pesticides, which are harmful to bees, is one of the most significant factors. Within the lodge operations we offer our guests our own “Bee Good” honey. Revenues from additional sales in shops will be distributed to Africa Amini Alama projects and also fund further development of the Beekeeping Institute. As a special highlight we offer bee safaris under expert guidance!

Meanwhile, several vegetable gardens have been installed in the schools of Momella, Ngabobo und Madebe and in the orphanage by Paulo Mollel, after the completion of his sponsored permaculture apprenticeship. Because environmental awareness starts in the first years of education …
